Review of Serendubity 2013
At the beginning of 2013, when it was still cold and rainy outside, a group of motivated musicians, artists, organizers and festival enthusiasts came together. All shared the idea of building a space, which is open for everybody, where people can come together to create something as a community. A place, where the boarders of organizers and participants merge and dissolve. We came up with the Serendubity Rhythm & Space Festival.
We provided the place, infrastructure, rhythms and performances and a total of 2000 people followed our dream. From the 19-20th of July 2013 all of these people created a vibe with a clear statement: A Festival is not just about the music and the performances, but about the people that come together. We proofed that enjoyment does not have to be overpriced and commercial.
Over 300 people volunteered to help during the two weeks of set up and take down phase, and approximately 120 artists performed in various places throughout these 3 days. Together we set up the location, cleaned the forest and fields, built stages and created a beautiful space filled with rhythm!
We are still completely overwhelmed by the participation that so many of the 2000 people got involved in. We are very happy that we can share these memories with all of you! And we can’t wait to sit together by a lake again and listen to great music.
A Big up for all the people involved in Serendubity 2013, you were the best crowd we could ever imagine!
What happened since then?
Since then some time has passed, many of us enjoyed a much needed break after 10 months of intense work, weekly meetings and a lot of first time experience in organizing such a big event. Since a couple of weeks, most of us are back and we started working for 2014. It is not an easy task to do all of this on a voluntary, non-profit orientated basis, but we loved it and we want to continue.
However organizing an event as big and complex as this, also means we carry some risks and although all of us work for free, there are always costs involved. We are not a company and we don’t have any previous funds, so all of us put together as much money as possible, out of our own pockets. With this money we paid toilets, electricity & water, soundsystems, stages, tents, food and drinks for artists and crew, travel costs for artists, Gema, and as you can probably imagine, the list does not stop here.
Sadly we are left with a minus of approximately 12.000 Euros. This also includes the money all of us have put into the festival, as well as costs from Gema and other expenses. Even though this is a big amount of money, we are already planning next year’s festival and are simultaneously thinking about how to get the money back in, before July 2014. This is not going to be easy, but we don’t think this is a reason to give up and we are ready to up the game for 2014! A big group of very enthusiastic people is doing their best and has come up with some creative ideas how to make both possible!
We hope that together we can make the idea of the Serendubity Rhythm and Space Festival happen again in 2014. It’s not going to be an easy task but we can’t wait to set up the speakers and create a place filled with good vibes together!
